This number died after the first performance out of town. Everybody, including director Moss Hart and Frederick Loewe, had always hated it and wanted it dropped. Lerner was sure that the song could be a hit and didn’t want to cut it. So he thought about why the audience hadn’t responded and he realized that the character who was singing it had appeared just once previously and the audience didn’t know who he was. So Lerner wrote a short little scene for Freddy in which the parlor maid comes to the door and announces him. and added a verse to the song The number practically stopped the show at the next performance. Loewe said to Lerner, “How dare you give me an inferiority complex!”
